Teens spreading the word about Teens Alone...

Orono DECA Group are Winners!
DECA means Distributive Education Clubs of America. Teens Alone is fortunate that a group of Orono High School students who belong to DECA selected Teens Alone as their project. They have raised awareness about Teens Alone beyond our wildest dreams. We know that it takes a while for people to become aware of a new service in their community. This is our second year serving the communities of the Orono School District, and we knew many families didn't know about Teens Alone, even though school personnel were making referrals.

Under the tutelage of Keith Jurek, three young women, Joan B., Tyler C., and Hilary P., took youth's "awareness of Teens Alone" from 33% to a whopping 96%! They raised awareness by blanketing the Orono community with posters and magnets, performing skits in the middle school, making a presentation to high school youth, and writing press releases. They appeared on 'KARE 11 News Saturday. They also gained support from local retailer Tom Reycraft, manager of the Maple Plain Food Center, who ordered 5,000 grocery bags with the Teens Alone logo and telephone number. After accomplishing these activities, the DECA group conducted a post-awareness survey.

DECA group members worked closely with the board's Community Relations Committee. Board member Cory Zanin said, "The experience of working with this great committee convinced us we have a wonderful resource of bright, committed youth who are eager to spread the Teens Alone word to their peers."

And what makes this story even sweeter is -- the team placed second in the Minnesota State DECA Competition. In late April they went to the National DECA Competition in Anaheim, California where they placed in the top ten! Congratulations and thank you!
